‘Airport’ explores the crossroads of a relationship, playfully using a quote from Esther Perel – creator of the podcast Where Should We Begin – as a sample. About the inspiration to do so, Doustra says, “I feel like (Perel) is providing my generation with words on how to talk about these subjects. It feels like romanticism and relationships are being redefined at the moment and I find it interesting to listen to these ideas and think about them.”
The song finds the parallels in being caught in the in between of a relationship and the transient nature of airports. Doustra described the similarities to Women in Pop, “Airports are strange. They’re these big grey areas. You’re about to go do something, be somewhere, but first you have to stay in this no man’s land for a while. To me this feels like the place where you
find yourself when you have to make a difficult decision. You’re in an area where you don’t know but you know the plane is leaving eventually. How to say goodbye? How to make decisions like that?”
These are questions that can leave you feeling paralyzed, unable to move forward. Luwten and the video’s director Charlene van Kasteren (who also did the video for Control, a song that was released at the same time as Airport) wanted to zoom in on those emotions and sit with them, as uncomfortable as they may be.
In addition to the 185K+ views on the video for “Control,” The track was launched as a World First on Beats1during which host Zane Lowe declared Luwten “incredible!” Among other playlist adds from Apple Music, Amazon, Deezer and YouTube Music,Spotify added the song to their New Music Friday Playlist in the US, CA, UK, NL, BE, NA, Gulf and Egypt and featured Luwten on their billboard in the Netherlands.
