Het negende album van The Wonder Stuff, ‘Better Being Lucky’, verschijnt precies dertig jaar na de iconische tweede plaat van de band, ‘HUP’. In de ruim dertig jaar nadat The Wonder Stuff hun eerste repetitie had in Stourbridge verkocht de band miljoenen platen en scoorde Miles Hunt en zijn bandleden maar liefst twintig top 20 hits in thuisland Engeland, waaronder het Britse feest-anthem Dizzy (met Vic Reeves) op nummer 1, en klassieker The Size Of A Cow (nummer 5). Eerder dit jaar kondigde de band al aan dat de bands’ originele gitarist, Malcolm Treece, terugkeert. Als toevoeging aan Malc’s comeback speelt ook gitartist Mark Gemini Thwaite (MGT, The Mission, Peter Murphy, Theatre Of Hate and Tricky) mee. Op drums: Pete Howard (The Clash, EAT, Queen Adreena en Hunt’s midden 90’s band, Vent 414). Tim Sewell is de bassist en Erica Nockalls blijft natuurlijk net als in de laatste veertien jaar van de band violiste en achtergrondzangeres.
Over de gereanimeerde bandline-up zegt Miles: “It would be easy to accuse me of being somewhat cruel in asking Mark, Pete and Tim to learn so much material, but knowing what stellar players they are, I just couldn’t resist putting them through their paces. Malc and Erica probably won’t thank me either, but what the hell, it’s all or nothing in this band!”
Tour in het Verenigd Koninkrijk
Om de nieuwe plaat, en het jubileum van ‘HUP’ te vieren tourt de band in november en december door het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Het wordt een bijzondere tour; niet alleen speelt de band HUP helemaal en materiaal van het nieuwe album, ook het debuutalbum ‘The Eight Legged Groove Machine’ wordt volledig gespeeld. ‘HUP’, uitgebracht in 1989, was het tweede volledige album van de band. Het leverde de band met single ‘Don’t Let Me Down Gently’ haar eerste Top20-hit op in het thuisland en ook tracks ‘‘Can’t Shape Up’, ‘Golden Green’, ‘Radio Ass Kiss’ en ‘Unfaithful’ kunnen als iconisch worden beschouwd.
Over de aankomende tour zegt zanger Miles Hunt het volgende: “When considering marking the release of the new album with a tour, I couldn’t help but think that we were missing out on an opportunity to acknowledge the thirtieth anniversary of HUP’s release. Once my mind went in that direction it occurred to me that we had completely ignored the thirtieth anniversary of The Eight Legged Groove Machine’s release last year. So why the hell not do it all in one spectacular show while I’ve still got the breath in me!?”
