Amir Mohamed el Khalifa - oftewel Oddisee - is één van de strafste rappers/producers van zijn generatie. Geboren en getogen in Washington DC, met Amerikaans-Soedanese roots en opgegroeid tussen de New Yorkse hiphop-geluiden - East Coast all the way!
'People hear what they see’ - zijn eerste grote succesalbum (2012, Mello Music) - was de voorbode van een nu al prachtige carrière: een resem topalbums ('The Good Fight’! 'The Beauty In All’!), een aardige collectie mixtapes en enkele meer dan geslaagde samenwerkingen met onder meer Flying Lotus, De La Soul en Hudson Mohawke.
In 2016 bracht hij zelfs twee mixtapes uit: op 'Alwasta’ en 'The Odd Tape’ worstelt Amir Mohamed met de Amerikaanse vooroordelen tegenover moslims, die hij uitschreeuwt tussen funky grooves, vlotte raps en obscure soul-samples met een heerlijk vette flow - volgens Pitchfork grossiert Oddisee’s muziek in "golden-era hiphop sound”.
Op 24 februari komt zijn nieuw album 'The Iceberg’ (Mello Music) uit, zijn derde release op één jaar tijd.
'The Iceberg’ is a distillation of stereotypical tropes in hip-hop and beyond, 12 tracks about money, sex, politics, race and religion that appear superficial until his multi-dimensional lyrics unfurl to expose the complexities of individuality and identity: how we see ourselves and how others see us. Deeply soulful, and shot through with jazz, Go-go, gospel, thick r&b and hard beats, the album is a timely, poetic statement.
