Steve Vai kondigt release aan van nieuw studioalbum 'INVIOLATE'.

Steve Vai en Favored Nations / Mascot Label Group hebben aangekondigd dat zijn nieuwe studioalbum getiteld Inviolate zal worden uitgebracht op CD en digitaal op 28 januari 2022. De LP zal volgen op 18 maart. Vandaag presenteren ze het nummer "Little Pretty" dat hier kan worden beluisterd: https://youtu.be/o8H4wRglcbE . De opname is een donker klinkende fusion-funk workout, bijna volledig gespeeld op een Gretsch hollow body gitaar, wat voor Vai een ongebruikelijk model is. Hij zegt, “It’s on the wall with all the other guitars, and I’d always just look at it and go, ‘One day I’m going to play you…’” Hij vervolgt, “In writing the chord changes for the solo section, and the solo itself, I dug deep into my academic music theory mind to create a set of chord changes where the harmonic atmosphere shifted on every change. The dense chord structures required a series of synthetic modes to navigate. This approach is along the lines of jazz and fusion players, but I knew I did not want it to sound anything like that and the solo had to be totally melodic. The results were pretty powerful in that the entire solo section evokes melodic atmospheric changes that shift dramatically but work together well.”

Gedurende zijn 40-jarige carrière heeft Steve Vai stelselmatig iets wat onmogelijk lijkt veranderd in iets wat heel goed mogelijk is... Van zijn dagen als Frank Zappa's "stuntgitarist", tot zijn uitgebreide recente solowerk. Vai heeft voortdurend de vooropgestelde manieren van traditioneel gitaarspel en compositie uitgedaagd - en bij meer dan één gelegenheid het instrument zelf een nieuwe vorm gegeven.

Hij geeft toe dat dit niet noodzakelijk zijn bedoeling is. “I don't sit around and say, ‘Okay, what can I do now that pushes the boundaries?” vertelt Vai over zijn benadering van de gitaar. “What I do say to myself is, ‘Okay, Vai – what are you going to do now that's going to interest you, that’s going to fascinate you, and that’s different than anything you've done before?” Het antwoord op die vraag komt in de vorm van Vai's nieuwste en 10e soloalbum, Inviolate. Negen nummers die de grenzen van de instrumentale gitaarmuziek verleggen - dit keer vond Vai niet alleen letterlijk een nieuwe gitaar uit, maar ook een nieuwe gitaarspeltechniek.

Tegelijkertijd presenteert Inviolate zijn meest gefocuste, gestroomlijnde en misschien wel meest krachtige muziek in jaren. “It’s very ‘Vai,’ whatever that means,” zegt hij lachend. “Someone else might be better than me at explaining what that is. But it’s just very honest music. Because a lot of my records, they're long and there's a lot of concepts and playing around with stories. This one has none of that. This is nine pretty dense all-instrumental compositions that I wanted to capture and record so I could get out there and play them live for people.”

De albumopener, “Teeth of the Hydra,” een Latin-fusion getinte compositie schreef en nam Vai op met een unieke op maat gemaakte gitaar, die hij de Hydra noemde. Een gitaar die gebouwd is in samenwerking met de ontwerpers van Hoshino en gebaseerd is op een "steampunk thema" idee van Vai. De Hydra is een beest van een instrument – een schepsel met ‘één lichaam, twee koppen en drie nekken’. De Hydra omvat onder andere: zeven- en 12-snarige gitaren; een viersnarige bas; harpsnaren; half-fretloze halzen; single-coil, humbucking, piezo en sustainer pickups; zwevende en hardtail tremolo bruggen; phase splitters; en nog veel meer. “It's an incredibly-built machine,” zegt Vai. “I told the guys at Hoshino, ‘Anything that you think is conventional, don't do that.’ This was an opportunity to exercise brutal creativity. And they went beyond.”

Vai gaat ook ‘beyond’ in zijn uitvoering. Door het hele nummer heen gebruikt hij de Hydra's volledige scala aan klankkleuren om een gitaarpartij te creëren die springlevend klinkt. “The interesting thing about the song and the guitar is that it all came at the same time,” zegt Vai. “It was one of those ‘inviolate’ inspirations – boom!”

Hij vervolgt: “I knew that I needed to create something with the Hydra that sounded like a real piece of music. It couldn’t be just a novelty. Because if you knew what my hands were doing, and how I'm using my left hand to create phrasings that work when I can't pick a note because my right hand is off somewhere else…my god. But the finished piece had to stand on its own. It couldn't sound like I was just trying to juggle stuff.”

In de loop van 2021 werden verschillende van deze composities publiekelijk gedeeld. Vai componeerde en nam het nummer "Knappsack," op na zijn schouderoperatie, op een moment dat zijn rechterarm in een mitella zat (of, zoals zijn chirurg, Dr. Knapp, het noemde, een "knappsack"), en was daardoor in staat om alleen zijn linkerhand te gebruiken bij het spelen van het stuk. Hij heeft een video uitgebracht van zijn uitvoering met één hand, die HIER te bekijken is. Hij zegt met een lach, “pretty soon after I started to see some clips of young kids pulling it off, too. It's really fascinating.”

Net als "Knappsack", bracht Vai eerder in 2021 "Candle Power" en een bijbehorende video uit. Maar hij voegde iets extra's toe aan de versie die verschijnt op Inviolate, met een nieuw opgenomen drumtrack van mede-Zappa alumnus Terry Bozzio (verder hebben bassisten Bryan Beller, Philip Bynoe en Henrik Linder, toetsenist David Rosenthal en drummer Vinnie Colaiuta hun steentje bijgedragen aan de plaat). Of "Apollo in Color", waar Vai's zwevende loopjes op zijn Ibanez PIA signature gitaar (het nieuw ontworpen model verschijnt voor het eerst op een studioalbum van Vai) worden omgeven door ornamenten van geluid, gespeeld op allerlei exotische snaarinstrumenten. In essentie komt het er allemaal op neer dat je je eigen stem moet vinden, en dan de moed en overtuiging moet hebben om je muzikale en creatieve instincten te volgen, waar die je ook mogen brengen - iets waar Vai in zijn spel nooit om verlegen heeft gezeten. “One of the great things about the guitar is you don't need to be a virtuoso to express your creative vision,” zegt hij. “I mean, Bob Dylan plays the guitar perfectly well for his expression. So does John McLaughlin. You just need to decide how much technique you want or need to get there. For myself, I came out of the chute wanting and needing it all. So, when it comes to my music, I don’t feel like I have to prove anything or conform to anything. I just love to think up creative ideas, and then use whatever skill I have to manifest them.”

“An inviolate inspiration is one that comes to you completely pure,” legt Vai uit. “It appears almost in its completeness, and there’s a recognition of it as being right for you – perfectly right for you. There’s no excuses in it. There's no fantasy in it. There's just a recognition of ‘yes.’ And then you capture that in a way that’s authentic to your unique creativity. Hopefully, that’s what I’ve done with this record.”
