The Line Is A Curve is het nieuwe album van Kae Tempest, dat op 8 april 2022 zal verschijnen. Het is het vierde studioalbum van de artiest uit het Zuid-Londense Lewisham. The Line Is A Curve komt na het veelgeprezen toneelstuk Paradise, dat vorige zomer in première ging in het National Theatre. De aankondiging gaat gepaard met de release van de eerste single More Pressure feat. Kevin Abstract(BROCKHAMPTON). Niemand minder dan Rick Rubin bracht Kae Tempest en Kevin Abstract bij elkaar, nadat de hiphopartiest begeesterd raakte van het werk van Kae.
Na het vorige studioalbum, The Book of Traps and Lessons, realiseerde Kae Tempest zich dat het nieuwe album een communicatieve plaat moest worden. Het concept manifesteerde in de gastbijdragen van Grian Chatten (Fontaines D.C.), Lianne La Havas, Confucius MC en Kevin Abstract. Kae Tempest trok deze visie tijdens het opnameproces door met drie vocale takes op één dag, voor drie verschillende generaties mensen: een onbekende man van 78, de 29-jarige dichter Bridget Minamore en drie jonge tienerfans die hadden gereageerd op een social media post.
Naast begeleidend artwork van de bekende fotograaf Wolfgang Tillmans, wordt het album door Kae Tempest als volgt beschreven:
“The Line Is A Curve is about letting go. Of shame, anxiety, isolation and falling instead into surrender. Embracing the cyclical nature of time, growth, love. This letting go can hopefully be felt across the record. In the musicality, the instrumentation, the lyricism, the delivery, the cover art. In the way it ends where it begins and begins where it ends.I knew I wanted my face on the sleeve. Throughout the duration of my creative life, I have been hungry for the spotlight and desperately uncomfortable in it. For the last couple of records I wanted to disappear completely from the album covers, the videos, the front-facing aspects of this industry. A lot of that was about my shame but I masked it behind a genuine desire for my work to speak for itself, without me up front, commodifying what felt so rare to me and sacred. I was, at times, annoyed that in order to put the work out, I had to put myself out. But this time around, I understand it differently. I want people to feel welcomed into this record, by me, the person who made it, and I have let go of some of my airier concerns. I feel more grounded in what I’m trying to do, who I am as an artist and as a person and what I have to offer. I feel less shame in my body because I am not hiding from the world anymore. I wanted to show my face and I dreamed of it being Wolfgang Tillmans who took the portrait.”
Kae Tempest is een bestseller auteur, dichter en muzikant. In 2013 won hen de Ted Hughes Award, sleepte nominaties voor de Costa Book Award en een BRIT Award in de wacht, stond twee keer op de shortlist voor de Mercury Prize en werd genomineerd voor twee Ivor Novello Awards. Ook werd Kae Tempest benoemd tot een Next Generation Poet door de Poetry Book Society, een tienjaarlijkse onderscheiding. In 2019 bracht Kae Tempest het studioalbum The Book of Traps and Lessons uit, geproduceerd door Rick Rubin.
