Vandaag heeft de Ierse post-punk band Cardinals hun langverwachte debuutalbum Masquerade uitgebracht. De band rondom de broertjes Manning timmert al een tijd hard aan de weg met hun EP en uitgebreide tours. Ze namen de tijd voor hun debuutplaat en het resultaat is dan ook een plaat met veel diepgang. De muziek beweegt tussen uitersten: van duisternis naar licht, van licht naar duisternis, van hoop naar wanhoop, van mededogen naar chaotische onverschilligheid.
Deze tegenstellingen waren het vertrekpunt voor de songs op het album, hierover vertelt frontman Euan Manning:
“Peeling back the ‘Masquerade’ or the facade we put up is something the record looks at too. It’s really easy to be cynical and far harder to be hopeful and genuine. You can’t be a total cynic if you’re making music or films or whatever it is, making art forces you to dig deeper than that protective layer of cynicism. Stripping it back is painful, you can find things you’re really not proud of but it also lends itself to a sort of acceptance that can’t be attained if you don’t allow yourself that vulnerability.”
