Op ‘Black To Blues Volume 2’ brengt Black Stone Cherry wederom een brullend eerbetoon aan hun blueshelden, ditmaal Freddie King, Robert Johnson, Otis Rush, Howlin’ Wolf, Elmore James en Son House. De eerste EP in deze serie, ‘Black To Blues’, werd uitgebracht in oktober 2017 en meteen overladen met een golf van lof van zowel de pers als fans. Naar aanleiding van het succes van deze eerste EP zegt zanger/gitarist Chris Robertson: " We could have never dreamed of the reaction we got from “Black to Blues”. It was amazing to have such a positive reaction to our take on some of our biggest influences in music. Now we are back for round two and we have added our great friend Yates Mckendree on organ/keys and he also makes an appearance on guitar! We kept a couple artists in the line-up from last time and introduced a few others into the mix as well! We can’t wait for everyone to hear and feel how much fun we had recording this project!!”
Na die vorige blues-EP bracht de band hun studioalbum ‘Family Tree’ (2018) uit, dat in vele landen in de hitlijsten kwam. De band toerde vervolgende intensief door Europa; inclusief een UK Arena Tour in 2018 met Monster Truck, plus optredens op Graspop, Download UK, Rock am Ring en Wacken Open Air. Ook toerden ze door de VS met ondermeer Lynyrd Skynyrd en Gov’t Mule, maar tussendoor hadden ze genoeg tijd om een nieuwe blues-EP op te nemen in Monocle Studios in Sulphur Well, Kentucky. De blues die Black Stone Cherry zo beïnvloedde was wild, rauw en heeft zijn eigen onmiskenbare groove. Dat is de link tussen de blues en Black Stone Cherry, die zo perfect op deze EP tot leven komt. Gitarist Ben Wells legt het als volgt uit “Muddy Waters, Freddie King, Howlin’ Wolf, and the like, we used to listen to that constantly growing up, and still do. It’s what we grew up playing and learning together. It’s the DNA of what our band is. It’s not just us covering songs. It’s about doing our own version of each song.”
De eerste track die uitkomt is hun versie van Robert Johnsons’ ‘Me And The Devil Blues.’ De band heeft er het volgende over te zeggen; “We chose this song because we have such an appreciation for Robert Johnson and his music. It was so simple, direct, and eerie in a way that just resonates with the listener. Since Roberts music was guitar and vocal, we decided to totally write new music and lay his words on top of it. All of the music was written literally on the spot while recording in the studio! We are very proud of how this track came out!”
In september en oktober keert Black Stone Cherry terug naar Europa, samen met Alice Cooper, om ook tracks van de EP’s live te spelen. Daarbij zijn ze ondermeer in 013 Tilburg en Vorst Nationaal te bewonderen.
