De uit Manchester afkomstige dichter, schrijver en producer Antony Szmierek kondigt vandaag zijn tweede album ‘Decoding Birdsong’ aan, dat op 21 augustus verschijnt via Mushroom Music / Virgin Music Group. Slechts achttien maanden na zijn veelgeprezen debuut ‘Service Station at the End of the Universe’ keert Szmierek terug met nieuw werk waarop hij een duidelijke artistieke groei laat horen. Op het album combineert hij meeslepende producties met zijn kenmerkende, scherpe teksten.
Samen met de aankondiging deelt hij zijn nieuwe video en single ‘Chalk’, geïnspireerd door de documentaire over het leven van Snooker prof Ronnie O’Sullivan: ‘The Edge of Everything’. In zijn eigen woorden: “It’s about the idea that chalking a cue makes a marginal difference to the outcome - a metaphor for chaos theory and the win-or-lose nature of the music industry.”
Het nummer ging vanochtend in première in de show van Lauren Laverne op BBC 6 Music en zal verschijnen op het aankomende album, evenals zijn recente disco-geïnspireerde single ‘The Heron’, een verwijzing naar zijn kompaan Ken, een opgezette vogel uit 1920 die ook op de albumcover prijkt.
Waar zijn debuut grotendeels een soloproject was, staat het nieuwe album bol van de samenwerkingen, met onder anderen Pretty Girl, Los Bitchos, 1-800 GIRLS, Imogen andthe Knife en Ellur.
Over het album zegt Szmierek: “Decoding Birdsong is about choosing to believe in something. Coincidence as a religion. Making your own luck in the face of loneliness and doubt. The smallest things can feel seminal, seismic and life affirming if you just choose to lean in, but it also asks if this is a dangerous way to live.
What happens when your numbers come in? What are the consequences of luck? Should you listen to the birds, or are you only ever going to hear what you want to hear? To help us explore this: a heron, dice, a plummeting airplane, the late-night TV show Aussie Gold Hunters and a fibreglass replica of Godzilla.”
Antony gooide al hoge ogen op festivals als Eurosonic Noorderslag (2025) en Into The Great Wide Open (2024). Op 29 mei speelt Antony een show in Melkweg en op 30 mei op Dauwpop Festival.

Naast het album kondigt hij een eigen tournee in het VK en Europa aan. Daarnaast zal hij het voorprogramma verzorgen van The Streets. Het album ‘Decoding Birdsong’ verschijnt op 21 augustus via Mushroom Music / Virgin Music Group.
