White Elephant, the collaborative project featuring members of Crazy P (Chris “Hot Toddy” Todd and Jim “Ron Basejam” Baron) alongside Ben “B.J.” Smith of Smith & Mudd, return with their new single “IDTYCLM”, out today. The track is the second to be lifted from their forthcoming debut album ‘World Elephant Day’, due for release on February 20th via Walk Don’t Walk in association with !K7.
A warm, life-affirming groove built on the trio’s shared musical intuition, “IDTYCLM” is described by the band as “a celebration of reciprocal love and the shedding of self-doubt.”
The release is accompanied by a mesmerising visualiser created by Bristol-based photographer and video artist Zoom, and is presented alongside a remix bundle featuring reinterpretations from Ron Basejam, B.J. Smith and Hot Toddy, each offering a distinct perspective on the original.
The band began unintentionally, during a weekend with no plan beyond experimenting in Crazy P’s Nottingham studio. What emerged was an unexpected synergy that grew, slowly and naturally, into a body of work shaped by trust, freedom and time.
‘World Elephant Day’ blends Crazy P’s established dancefloor sensibility with more introspective songwriting and detailed instrumental arrangements. Across the record, the trio move fluidly between styles, from the disco-leaning pulse and the 80s-referencing drive to the stripped-back textures. Though some tracks were written over a decade ago, and others far more recently, the album coheres through chemistry rather than genre, the sound of three musicians weaving instinctively around each other.
“We didn’t really know what we were,” remembers Chris. “We didn’t have a plan at all. The first few things we wrote were just us relying on what we did elsewhere… but after a few days messing around, something clicked. We found a synergy, if that’s not too grand a word for it.” That synergy between Chris Todd, Jim Baron and Ben Smith is what became White Elephant.
Throughout the record, that sense of musicianship, the kind that modern production often glosses over, shines through. It is music made by hand, by ear, by instinct. And yet it never leans on nostalgia. It feels rooted, alive, here. The grooves still pulse with the DNA of Crazy P’s dancefloor legend, but there’s a deep human tenderness too, saxophones, vocal harmonies, acoustic guitars, organs calling the faithful to celebrate.
“It was never about deadlines or expectations. Just the joy of making something together,” says Chris “Hot Toddy” Todd. Ben “BJ” Smith adds: “It’s music that grew at its own pace, and that’s why it feels honest.”
