The Barr Brothers will release Let it Hiss - their long-awaited first studio album in nearly 8 years - this Friday (Secret City Records). Today they’ve shared the final single from the album in “Another Tangerine.” Let it Hiss isn’t just a collection of 10 vital new songs, it’s a document of transformation, and an invitation to a place where the flaws aren't edited out, they're amplified. The result of a pivotal shift, it represents a pause for reflection, a reckoning with vulnerability, and a reconnection between two brothers - Brad and Andrew Barr - who’ve spent their entire lives making music side by side.
“Another Tangerine” explores the album’s more intimate, folk-leaning side and might remind fans of their 2014 hit “Even The Darkness Has Arms.” Guitarist/singer/songwriter Brad says: “This was the last song we recorded for the album. We recorded it live in a room together, nylon string, drums and vocals. I'd been kicking this song idea around for about 4 years… ‘the skin was dirty but the fruit was clean.’ I was trying to make a recommitment to love, but within the mindset I was operating, I didn't have the tools to do this. The words would not come.....UNTIL I changed the fuel I was running on. Then, slowly, came gratitude, compassion, acceptance, trust, and all the other verses and the chorus followed.”
The Barr Brothers are currently on the road with Mumford & Sons, on a tour of East Coast arenas including a homecoming performance at Montreal’s Bell Centre. Andrew - The Barr Brothers’ drummer/singer/songwriter - has also been playing drums for Mumford & Sons on their recent Rushmere tour. The Barr Brothers will then launch their headline tour in support of Let it Hiss this coming February, including Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, The Sinclair in Boston, Thalia Hall in Chicago, and MTELUS in Montreal. Full dates below.
Let It Hiss was produced by Brad and Andrew, working primarily as a duo out of their Montreal studio, and worked with mix engineer Jon Low (The National, Taylor Swift, Bon Iver). The album also features Elizabeth Powell (Land Of Talk), Ariel Engle (La Force), Klô Pelgag, Patrick Watson, and Jim James (My Morning Jacket).
The Barr Brothers have shared a number of singles and music videos since announcing the album in June, including title track “Let it Hiss,” propulsive open-road anthem “Run Right Into It”, the graceful folk hymn “English Harbour” featuring Jim James, and “Naturally”, a heartfelt ode to self-acceptance.
