Squid are releasing two covers via Bandcamp and with all proceeds being donated to the food bank charity in Bristol. The release is titled 'Natural Resources', artwork has been designed by artist and friend of the band John Molesworth. First up is their idiosyncratic take on legendary composer Steve Reich’s ‘Clapping Music’. Originally recorded as part of a session for NME, their version augments the polyrhythmic handclaps with synths, horns and even vocals - of which the lyrics have been lifted from an interview Steve Reich did on the piece.
The second is their off-the-cuff version of cult hero Robert Wyatt’s track ‘Pigs’ performed at End Of The Road Festival 2019. The performance was part of The Line Of Best Fit’s Piano Stage programme and was the first time the band had ever played the song. Both tracks have had a healthy dose of producer Dan Carey’s midas touch for your listening pleasure.
The band explain their reasons for sharing this music now: “We’ve all been affected by Covid in some way, but for people who were already struggling, the pandemic has increased the likelihood of lasting difficulties that will continue after lockdown comes to an end. All of the proceeds from this release will be given to the East Bristol Food Bank who are offering vital support in the local area, covering the whole city across 5 outlets. Recently, Squid unveiled their AA-side singles ‘Sludge’ and ‘Broadcaster’, alongside news of signing to Warp Records. The singles are available on 10” vinyl featuring an extended version of ‘Broadcaster’.
