L'hommage de Ryan Scott à la caisse claire + l'exploration de l'hiver par Toninato et Thiessen
Toronto's Ryan Scott, a formidable contemporary music percussionist, has the 21st-Century Canadian Snare Drum, a two-disc affair, coming out with the Quatuor Bozzini's Collection QB imprint. While it centers an instrument with a relatively narrow sonic scope, it's a remarkably varied set that showcases the versatility and pliability of the drum in question. It also features some of today's most exciting composers, with contributions from the likes of Bekah Simms, Michael Oesterle, Nicole Lizée, Anna Höstman, Andrew Staniland, Emilie Cecilia LeBel, Amy Brandon, and Monica Pearce, artists who explore everything from delicate, stripped-back pieces to peculiar rhythmic invention, intricate electroacoustics to probing the resonances of the snare drum.
Ambiances Magnétiques is also launching the second album of Toninato & Thiessen which diverges considerably from the acoustic instrumental world of their debut. Where its predecessor unfurled the unadorned duet landscape of Ida Toninato's saxophones and Jennifer Thiessen's viola, Dream of Heat (out 13 February on vinyl and digitally) trades in dark songcraft with rich atmospherics. The pair sing and play synthesizers in addition their aformentioned implements, and they're joined by Jason Sharp who serves as producer and performs on synth as well. The six constituent works are timely, given the harhness of this year's cold, as they explore the cycle of death and rebirth inherent to the winter season.
