Rural Tapes has released the video for his new single ‘Bossa nova for the contrails of my tears’, taken from his latest critically acclaimed album Inner Space Music out now via Smuggler Music.

‘Bossa nova for the contrails of my tears’ is a critics favourite from the new record, with Uncut proclaiming it “steals the show”. Its infectious synths and smooth jazz beats reflect an ethereal muzak experience while The Dream Syndicate’s Steve Wynn provides an amusing spoken word monologue about air travel, “a miracle reduced to a tedious inconvenience.”

The trippy animated video for the song captures the bizarre and surreal experience of human aviation in a wonderfully warped flight experience through the mind.

Regarding the single Steve says, “I listened back to the final results of this wonderful collaboration I did with Rural Tapes for this album, appropriately enough, while on a flight from New York City to Minneapolis. In a very meta fashion, I found myself musing and pondering about the musing and pondering about aviation and the shifting moods and mind patterns while aloft in the sky. It nearly blew my mind, in all the best ways.”

Inner Space Music is a masterful melding of krautrock, jazz, world music and ambient soundscapes pulling influence from the likes of Kraftwerk, Air, Tortoise, Serge Gainsbourg, Can, Raymond Scott, far out George Harrison and Joe Meek in a blissful largely instrumental odyssey.

The record follows the release of Rural Tapes self-titled debut album last year, which received equally great praise from the likes of GQ, MOJO, Uncut, Shindig, Prog, The Independent, Electronic Sound, Computer Music and more.

Rural Tapes is the moniker of the Norwegian producer and multi-instrumentalist Arne Kjelsrud Mathisen. On Inner Space Music, Arne plays organs, synthesizers, mellotron, drums, percussion, gamelan, trombone, and tuba.

As a member of The No Ones, Arne has played alongside R.E.M. members Scott McCaughey and Peter Buck for years. Having joined him on Rural Tapes, the pair once again bring their esteemed musicianship to Inner Space Music, with Peter Buck playing bass, and Scott McCaughey on piano. PJ Harvey saxophonist Terry Edwards who also performed on Rural Tapes once again performs on the new album. The Ladybug Transistor’s Gary Olson also brings his talents to Inner Space Music playing trumpet.

They are also joined by Kristine Tjøgersen (clarinet, bass clarinet), Lars Løberg Tofte (bass), Marin Stallemo Bakke (violins), Sigurd Thomassen (acoustic guitar) and Øystein Braut (electric guitar).

While the debut album Rural Tapes was created over a period of almost 10 years, the music on Inner Space Music has been composed and recorded during one intense month in January 2022 in Mathisen’s own studio Nygrenda Vev & Dur in Norway.

A special Rural Tapes live stream performance has been announced to be beamed straight from Nygrenda Vev & Dur, where Arne will perform tracks from the new album live alongside Lars Løberg Tofte, Sigurd Thomassen and Øystein Braut. The performance will happen at 7pm GMT on December 7th and access can be purchased here.
