Alt-pop newcomer Pip Lewis releases her sophomore full-length album Growing Pains this Friday via Enci Records. Pairing honest lyricism with dreamy synths and melodic hooks, Growing Pains marks a bold and fully-formed arrival for the 22-year-old UK-born, San Diego-based singer-songwriter.
“A sonic autobiography,” Pip says of the album. “It’s basically my journal for the years 2021–23. It’s woven with the fibers of my identity as an artist and as a person, and with pieces of what my life looked like at the time of writing it.” Across ten emotionally resonant tracks, Growing Pains explores themes of love in its many forms—the presence of love, the absence of love, the loss of love, and the rediscovery of it—as well as the quiet upheaval that comes with change.
“It’s grappling with the idea of growing up and sometimes growing apart from familiarity,” Pip adds. “It’s the epitome of ‘it is what it is.’ The lyrics and narratives in the album don’t fight the enormity of the emotions expressed throughout the songs. The emotions are conveyed and left in the lap of the listener. From then on, the listener decides how to interpret the stories, thoughts, and feelings.”

That intimacy and emotional honesty are perhaps most striking on the song “When It Comes To You,” a standout track that began with a prompt Pip gave herself: “trying to write something that sounds like what falling in love feels like.” Originally built around its orchestral-style chorus, the song evolved organically into a dreamy, aching meditation on connection, vulnerability, and emotional surrender.
