Canadian alt-folk artist Oliver James Brooks returns with Between Me & Me, his fifth studio album — a raw and deeply introspective body of work written, recorded, and mixed over the past two and a half years at River Valley Studio and Wallace Studio in Toronto. During this time, Brooks endured profound personal loss: the sudden departure of his wife and the unexpected passing of his mother. While most albums are written about relationships between people, Between Me & Me explores the relationship Brooks has with himself after losing everything that once anchored him. Marking his first foray into synth-driven textures, the album blends organic instrumentation with atmospheric electronic elements, creating an emotional palette that mirrors his journey through grief, reflection, and self-discovery. “It almost never saw the light of day,” Brooks admits. “But I’m happy to release it—maybe it will help someone.” Finished and mastered to tape by Joao Carvalho on an Ampex ATR-102, the record carries a warmth and authenticity that underscores its emotional core.

The album’s lead single, “Too Dark To See,” captures the quiet intensity that defines Brooks’ new chapter. Written in the wake of personal upheaval, the track merges ethereal synths with grounded acoustic tones, reflecting the disorientation and clarity that often coexist in moments of emotional darkness. It’s an evocative preview of Between Me & Me, a collection that navigates the complex terrain of grief, growth, and self-reconciliation with unflinching honesty. Known for his folk-rooted storytelling and lyrical precision, Brooks has drawn comparisons to Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, and Kurt Vile, with past releases praised by outlets like Indie88, Americana UK, and Exclaim! for their hypnotic and boundary-pushing sound. With Between Me & Me and its striking single “Too Dark To See,” Brooks reaffirms why he remains one of Canada’s most compelling voices in modern folk — an artist unafraid to turn personal pain into something profoundly resonant and beautifully human.
