When Timothy McKenzie – professionally known as Labrinth– emerged in the early 2010s, he was instantly recognized as a generational talent: an artist who defied genre, blending pop, hip-hop, electronic music, and orchestral flourishes into songs that felt cinematic and addictive. Over the last decade, he’s deepened that legacy – scoring HBO’s Euphoria (earning Emmy nominations along the way), forming LSD with Diplo and Sia, collaborating with global icons like Beyoncé, Billie Eilish, the Weeknd, and Zendaya, and expanding his sonic world with the release of the Prelude EP, a bold conceptual work that previewed the dramatic, world-building direction his music was headed. The grandeur of his 2023 Coachella performance cemented his place as one of music’s true visionaries.
Beneath the industry’s acclaim, Labrinth began questioning everything: “What do I really want to say as an artist? Why am I creating?” he asked himself.
He found his answer in Cosmic Opera – a grand, unfiltered exploration of his identity, his power, and his manhood from an artist reborn. Written after his diagnoses of ADHD and autism, the album is a fearless journey through his inner universe, weaving sweeping orchestras with ferocious hip-hop beats and soulful melodies to create music that feels like a futuristic blockbuster.
On “Implosion,” he channels post-Coachella dissociation into a pulse-racing chase scene. “SWMF” struts with dark humor and towering confidence, inspired by Star Wars and 2001: A Space Odyssey. On “Big Bad Wolf,” he taps into fierce ego as creative fuel, while “I Keep My Promises” flips an abusive-relationship metaphor onto the music industry itself.
The album closes on a quiet, gospel-tinged confession: “Still In Love With The Pain,” a reminder that even after deep healing, old scars remain. “Even when you deal with your inner issues, you can still find yourself going back to old habits,” he says. “But that’s the challenge – we all want to do something that matters.”
With Cosmic Opera, Labrinth isn’t just making music – he’s building an entire universe and daring the world to join him inside of it
