Award-winning musical collaborators Kefaya & Elaha Soroor today unveil the video for their new single, “Our Freedoms Must Be Won.” A powerful blend of global sounds and political commentary, the track marks the latest release from the UK-based international ensemble, following its official launch on November 27th.

“This song carries a message of resilience, liberation, and revolution, reminding us that freedom is never simply granted to the oppressed - it is something we hold close, nurture, and fight for through struggles and resistance,” the band shared.
The lyrics are drawn from the work of renowned Hazara poet Aziza Fayaz, whose advocacy for Hazara rights resonates with marginalised communities worldwide, reflecting a broader fight against fascism, subjugation, and authoritarianism. Musically, the track channels the hypnotic and transcendental spirit of Qawwali, Gnaoua, and Indian classical traditions, filtered through psychedelic rock, post-punk, and electronic dance music.
Following their critically acclaimed album Songs of Our Mothers (Bella Union), which won the 2020 Songlines Award for Best Fusion Album, Kefaya and Soroor continue to push the boundaries of global music.
Kefaya, the London-based trio of Giuliano Modarelli, Al MacSween, and Joost Hendrickx, is known for its boundary-breaking approach to global sounds, jazz, and socially conscious music. For this project, they reunite with Elaha Soroor, a pioneering Hazara singer whose voice conveys both emotional depth and unflinching power. Soroor rose to prominence as a finalist on Afghanistan’s Afghan Star and became the first female Hazara singer to perform on Afghan television. She has since appeared on BBC Farsi, Al Jazeera, and other Persian media outlets.
Our Freedoms Must Be Won showcases the trio’s signature experimentation with rhythm and texture, blending polyrhythms, immersive synthesisers, and ecstatic trance-inducing grooves with cutting-edge lyrics.
