Bristol duo Foreign Affairs have released their brand new single, ‘One Minute’. A concise and powerful confessional anthem, the track blends infectious songwriting with evocative catharsis. As an intimate biographical statement, the song takes a step away from the duo’s more chorus-based writing to deliver a stark and arresting track which delves into the emotions surrounding life, love and loss.
“It sets our stall out exactly as we are,” explain the duo. “We like writing catchy, uplifting festival type songs, but with the music we grew up listening to it’s also really important that we draw on the harder hitting things in life.”
Foreign Affairs is the musical collaboration of brothers Adam and Lawrence Purnell, who began writing together in their early teens before Adam relocated to Brussels to study guitar. The move did not halt their progress, with writing sessions over Skype maintaining their productivity and the long distance partnership providing the inspiration for their name.
On Adam’s return to the UK the duo released their first single, ‘Sell My Soul’, which received both local and national BBC radio play, and in December of 2018 the brothers released their first EP The Old Fire Station. The record was the culmination of their journey to date, the sounds, sights and experiences that the duo have shared. The EP received widespread critical acclaim and was followed by a 22-date European tour with Grammy-nominated artist Larkin Poe.
Drawing from influences including The Lumineers, Johnny Cash and The Kings Of Leon, the duo blend hints of powerful Americana with pop sensibilities to create infectious, soulful and evocative anthems.
‘One Minute’ is the duo’s first original music since the release of The Old Fire Station EP, and sees them return powerfully charged and ready to make a bold mark in 2020 with a host of new music yet to come.
