I'm happy to be working with extra-talented Brooklyn multi-instrumentalist Benjamin Lazar Davis on a lot of new music that'll be coming out in 2021. Ben has always been everywhere as a musician and collaborator, working with Okkervil River, Kimbra, Sam Amidon, Anaïs Mitchell and Lady Lamb among others, and making records on his own and with folk pop collective Cuddle Magic, as well as in a duo setting with Joan Wasser (Joan As Policewoman) and Bridget Kearney.

Today he's sharing a new song and video, equal parts funny and anguished, "I Bet You're Fucking" - cowritten with Jeremy McDonald as well as frequent collaborator and Lake Stret Dive member Bridget Kearney.

“I Bet You're Fucking” is a tender-hearted, introspective alternative-pop song that imparts lessons about the joys and perils of sex and relationships. The word “fucking” is sung 22 times, and its meaning changes shape throughout -- used sometimes as an angry adverb, other times as a resentful gerund, and ultimately as a celebratory acceptance.

The concept for “I Bet You’re Fucking” started in a bar, after Davis exchanged a knowing glance with a friend. Davis took the song idea to his good friend and collaborator Jeremy McDonald (Beyonce, Kevin Garrett), and together they grew the song into a mathematical groove, with melodic fragments and guitar parts, and later, on a drive up to the Catskills with frequent collaborator Bridget Kearney, Davis completed the lyrics. Additional horns, lap steel, and mellotron were added in the studio with co-producer Lars Horntveth (AHA!, Jaga Jazzist) and mix engineer Luke Moellman (Great Good Fine Okay).

This and the previous singles "If You Want It" and "What if I?" are part of a new solo LP that'll be due later this year on Reveal (UK) and 11A (US)- we'll have more info on that as soon as possible but feel free to mention that much for now.

Eclectic Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter, arranger, composer, and producer Benjamin Lazar Davis has made his name as a valued collaborator as well as a gifted solo artist. With a talent for indie rock, pop, and folk sounds, Davis has created trippy but engaging sounds with Cuddle Magic and Okkervil River, and he's contributed to recordings by Kimbra, Lady Lamb, and Anna & Elizabeth. Davis is also passionate about African music, and has used his knowledge in all its forms to record projects in tandem with Joan as Police Woman and Bridget Kearney. "What If I" follows “If You Want It” as his first new music since 2018’s break-out debut solo album Nothing Matters
