London post-punk specialists Alien Chicks release second EP ‘Forbidden Fruit’, out today (May 9th) via Hideous Mink Records (Opus Kink) & SO Recordings (Enter Shikari, Deadletter, Big Special).
Continuing their thrilling momentum following the release of lead singles ‘Donkeyhead’, ‘Mr Muscle’ and ‘Babe’ earlier this year (as well as this week’s focus track ‘Say Fish’), Alien Chicks’ newest extended release cements their position as one of the leading figures in the emerging punk landscape. Armed with the biting vocals and sharp guitar work of Josef Lindsay, the pulsating basslines of Stefan Parker-Steele, and the explosive drumming of Martha Daniels, the group’s raw and innovative soundscapes combine to perfection on their newest release.
Whether delivering rapid-fire rap verses, intricate jazz-inspired bass riffs, or thunderous punk rhythms, Alien Chicks continue to push boundaries and defy expectations. Their intoxicating live show has already seen them sell-out multiple London headliners over the last few years including the iconic Moth Club last summer, as well as sharing stages alongside the likes of English Teacher, Fat Dog and Warmduscher to name a few.
Praise across the media landscape has since followed from The Independent, NME, DIY, Dork, Clash, CMU and Rough Trade, whilst plaudits have also circulated across the BBC Radio 1 (Jack Saunders, Arielle Free, Amy Lamé), BBC 6 Music (Steve Lamacq, Tom Robinson) and Radio X (John Kennedy) airwaves. With a rapturously received UK tour support alongside Lambrini Girls ticked off recently, as well as their biggest London headliner yet at a sold-out Oslo, Hackney earlier this week, the band are primed for a busy summer with appearances at the likes of Glastonbury Festival and The Great Escape to come.
Speaking ahead of their EP release, the band explained: "There’s a bit of a joke behind the EP name ‘Forbidden Fruit’ because it came about when we were talking about how our relationship with each other has to remain platonic because we’re in a band together so we’re all forbidden fruits. Deep down we just want to be a throuple.
The EP is sonically reflective of our varied sound, dipping in and out of different genres in typical Alien Chicks style. There are loud, punky moments counteracted by quieter, jazzier moments and we feel these dynamics are illustrated the most in the EP focus track “Say Fish” which concludes the project. It is one of our favourite songs to play live, and is one of the newest of our catalogue.
Lyrically, the EP covers a huge range of topics from tongue-in-cheek themes like cleaning products that we don’t actually use, to taking the piss out of various people, to nihilism and how capitalism makes everything feel a bit pointless. Joe also talks about how people try to change themselves based on current trends and hide who they truly are, and this is exactly what we don’t want to do as a band. So we hope ‘Forbidden Fruit’ stays true to the Alien Chicks sound while dipping into a range of musical genres that we find so fun to play live”.
