Columbia Records/Legacy Recordings releasen op 30 oktober aanstaande Bob Dylan’s “The Basement Tapes Complete: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11”.
Deze historische uitgave - samengesteld uit de zorgzaam gerestaureerde originele studiotapes (waarvan een groot deel zelfs pas onlangs werd terug gevonden) is een zesdelige en definitieve kroniek van de Basement Tapes, de legendarische opname sessies die Dylan in 1967 deed met muzikanten van zijn toenmalige begeleidingsgroep, die daarna bekend en beroemd zullen worden als ‘The Band’.
Tussen de vele hoogtepunten uit Dylan’s oeuvre, nemen de De Basement tapes toch een speciale plaats in. Ze zijn altijd al een bron van fascinatie geweest – en nog steeds- voor de opeenvolgende generaties Dylan kenners en fans. Het is dan ook een sterk verhaal: op het hoogtepunt van zijn toenmalige carriere had Bob in de mid sixties 3 uiterst succesvolle albums na mekaar uitgebracht met "Like A Rolling Stone" als een van de meest iconische nummers uit die periode. Na jaren van akoestische en folky muziek, schoffeerde hij daarna het grootste deel van zijn fans en de muziekpers door in 65 op Newport electrisch aan te treden, gevolgd door een lange en controversiele tour met band door de US en Europa. Dit alles kwam in Juli ‘66 tot een abrupt einde door een motorongeval waarbij Dylan node voor ettelijke maanden uit de publieke belangsgstelling verdween. Samen met Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Garth Hudson en Levon Helm (The Band) namen ze stiekem in ’67 een 100tal nummers op in de kelderverdieping van een klein huis, door de groep omgedoopt tot "Big Pink".
Het ging om een heleboel covers of traditionals maar ook een reeks splinternieuwe Bob Dylan songs, waaronder toekomstige classics als "I Shall Be Released," "The Mighty Quinn," "This Wheel's On Fire" of "You Ain't Going Nowhere." De opnames bleven echter in de kast liggen en hier duikt voor het eerst het fenomeen ‘bootleg’ op. Een aantal van de nummers kwamen via casettes, tapes en testpersingen ‘in omloop’ en doken vanaf ’69 op als illegale albums. In 1975 werden de ‘Basement Tapes’ voor het eerst officieel uitgebracht, maar met amper 16 nummers (waarvan slechts een schamele 8 met Dylan zelf, de rest waren opnames van The Band). Toch werd het album een groot commercieel succes en Dylan werd op handen gedragen door de critici en in één trek uitgeroepen tot de meest invloedrijke muzikant/kunstenaar van zijn generatie. Onder de fans werd er natuurlijk volop gespeculeerd wat er verder nog voor schatten op de tapes zou staan ... de heilige graal voor Dylanologen was geboren.
Daarom kan het historisch belang van deze heruitgave niet genoeg benadrukt worden, het is duidelijk dat er een aantal nooit eerder verschenen nummers, opnames en versies voor het eerst beschikbaar worden: alle nummers staan – in onberispelijke kwaliteit - gerangschikt in de volgorde van opname, en bij de restauratie van de tapes is steeds getracht om zo dicht mogelijk bij de oorspronkelijke klank en geest van de originele opnames te blijven.
Ook dit keer zijn er -naast een 3LP versie- ook weer 2 CD versies.
